Islets of Langerhans

The F4/80-positive macrophage population of the major insulin and glucagon-secreting organ of the body seems quite variable between animals. The majority of the cells are perivascular, with some processes extending through the endocrine tissue. Most of the interest in macrophages in this location relates to their role in insulitis, type 1 diabetes and rejection of islet allografts.
